Codelco: Chuqui electrolytic Cu refinery having difficulties

Source: BNamericas

The revamped electrolytic refinery at Chilean state-owned Codelco's Chuquicamata mine in region II is experiencing some "risks and difficulties" but is in production, Codelco executive president Jose Pablo Arellano said in a statement.

"We are taking charge of the situation," he said. "Experts are working to see how we can reach [the output level] that was originally foreseen."

Last year, Codelco shut down Chuquicamata's oldest refinery and launched a project to modernize its newer one with the aim of increasing its electrolytic copper cathode capacity by 20%.

The project wrapped up at the start of 2007. Codelco has not specified its current output rate.

Chuquicamata is part of the Codelco Norte division, which churned out 941,000t of copper in 2006 out of Codelco's total of 1.68Mt that year from wholly owned mines.
