Pavers look nice either way. The fact that you're doing a pattern will make it look great. But before you decide on checkerboard look at a picture of a herringbone one. I had the same choice and I went with the latter

This is sweet William and its easy to grow as well. I planted a bunch of it after Bill refused to marry me LOL
