UW, those are very good excerpts but they're focused on describing an insurgency. Does the author explain how to defeat an insurgency? Here are some concerns I have about defeating the insurgents in Iraq...

You said in an earlier post that we should use our conventional forces to seal the borders rather than patrolling Baghdad. But we can't even seal our own US borders, so how can we seal Iraq's? Build a wall? The Mideast practically invented bribery, corruption, and smuggling. I bet they can stuff a grenade down a sheep's throat in Syria and pull it out the other end after they herd the flock over the border into Iraq.

Do you think all the smuggling is via Syria and Iran? I have no evidence, but I strongly suspect people, money, and supplies for Al-Qaeda and the Sunnis are also coming in thru Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

Do you think stopping the smuggling will really stop the trouble? There was a report a while back that the Sunni insurgents were generating plenty of cash inside Iraq, via robbery, extortion, and kidnapping for ransom. (I hear the French, Italians, and Germans pay quite well to get their journalists back.)
