Oecon, I agree with Long'un here.

I don't object to seat belts or smoking, but I heartedly object to the gub'mint sticking its nose in on what individuals do. I also don't think there should be any laws against skydiving, bungee jumping, or rock climbing.

While you may not like the "slippery slope" characterization, it's a very real problem. Perhaps you'd prefer the "camel's nose under the tent" analogy? <G>

As a case in point, consider the recently proposed law in CA that would send parents to jail for spanking their kids. The state of Arizona had to specifically pass a law several years ago that in fact PERMITTED parents to spank their kids, as a result of various lawsuits.

Some cities have passed ordinances telling adults that they couldn't even smoke in their homes or cars.

I assume that you and I are of similar ages. If so, we both grew up in an age where kids could ride in the back of pickups, take naps on the "rear shelf" of our parent's cars, and mothers could ride with infants in their laps, even in airplanes. While I'll concede that perhaps the government has an interest in regulating seat belts and motorcycle helmets for kids under the age of 18, they have no business or interest in such regulation of adults.

"BTW, in case you hadn't noticed it, slippery slope arguments are a favorite tactic of the intellectually challenged on the left where every little thing the government does to catch and prosecute terrorists triggers yet another look at what Bushhitler has done now!!! tirade. Such arguments are what the weak-minded fall back on when they can't make a coherent case in the issue at hand."

where do I mail the quarter ??
