Rule through fear is exactly how GW won in 2004 (ie. "vote for the elephants because if you don't the terrorists will kill you...."). Such a huge mountain of BS. But the elephants tried that tactic again in 2006 and failed miserably. This tactic is an age old tactic to get people to give up personal freedoms too.

We do not need to give up one molecule of civil liberties in order to fight terrorism. We need to cling more tightly to all of them and not give any ground to anyone. If you give any up, where does it stop? And what is left to protect?

I think the drift to the Republican party has been going on for a very long time due to the continual move of the Democratic party to the left.

911 affected many people - who realized the Republicans were more serious about national defence than Democrats (make that the modern Democrat party).
