less spending, better education, tough defense, civil rights and liberties,

Everybody is for these at least in theory. But how to get there is a problem.

Any attempt to cut spending is condemned as cruel hard-heartedness.

Better education takes second place to teachers unions, protecting public schools from competition, and goofy educational ideas ... like whole language and bilingual ed.

Tough defense is hawkish warmongering.

Civil liberties conflicts with a tough defense apparently - look at the outcry over monitoring calls by suspected terrorists overseas to people in the US. Look at the condemnation of the international terror financing program. The public is told we torture people wholesale and the terrorists we've detained are viewed as victims instead of villains. Look at Gore speaking in Jiddah telling the Saudis how terrible the Bush administration is to Arabs trying to enter the US.
