I agree with that, but I wonder if we mean the same thing.

I don't know how to measure relative risk/reward. However, what goes up fast can also come down fast, and what goes up slower will probably come down slower too. Seeking safety, many people will switch to higher quality low volatility stocks after their more volatile specs have declined. This IMHO is a mistake. The time to switch (gradually) into low volatile quality stocks is BEFORE the market declines. When your good spec stocks have declined dramatically it's time to switch back to them (gradually), not to seek the safety of low volatility, or (shudder) CASH. (all IMHO).
