I hear ya on complex laws. Every year it seems estate laws change. It looks like 2010 is the best year to die, if one were to plan such a thing. 2011 the worst, unless the laws are changed yet again (probably will happen).

Fortunately my wife and I are in pretty good concurrence as to what should happen but the steps in setting things in order are not yet worked out in our case.

We are kicking around the idea of Living Trusts currently. I just don't see a lot of value added by high fee lawyers. In our case there will be little squabbling amongst the relatives and the paths to succession are pretty clear. We just want to eliminate any ambiguity as the local state law of intestate succession does not match our wishes.
