re. the renditions, habeas corpus/Geneva convention for captured terrorists, listening in on overseas terrorists communications, I have to stick by this:

The Constitution exists to protect the rights of US citizens. It is not a suicide pact designed to prevent the protection of US citizens from attack by foreign enemies.

In every war, from the Revolutionary war to WWII, there were out of the ordinary things done in order to defeat the enemy. It did not destroy our constitutional freedoms - they survived Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus, FDR's illegal confinement of Japanese-Americans, and much worse.

We should not destroy our ability to defend ourselves from enemies that will do us harm. I see the Democrats playing politics with national defense - Gore's support for doing what was thought to be needed to fight terror and then abandoning that when a Republican is in power is a prime example.
