One big problem with wiretapping is that the wiretap laws did not keep up with technology and the VoIP phone services that many are using are not in any way protected. If you are getting a fixed rate for unlimited long distance, chances are that is through a VoIP phone service that is routinely being scanned electronically for key words, all legally. Got cable TV and phone? That's VoIP. Not protected for privacy in any way. In theory they need a court order to do it with a regular old phone technology.

And the wire tapping of those VoIP lines used by so many is being automated right this minute. And it is "legal". And I know at least one company that is making the software tools to do it. The general public is VERY naive, they haven't got the foggiest clue about any of this. Ignorance for them is bliss - so sad.
