Pure ideology, Bill. Not facts.

Money is money. If it comes from the feds, comes from a junk bond trader, comes from Hugo Chavez, or comes from Mother Teresa's will, it's still money.

If there are strings attached, that's one thing. (Think "Bush stem cell limitations".) If there is a block on competitive developments, that's another problem (rare in the US, unless licensing is required). But if it's just money to bootstrap research, then by gum it's cash.

Kinda like that ARPAnet thing, where federal money (and usage) helped develop some interesting technology.
