<< How long have your friends served at Gitmo? >>

One friend was there for six months, the other for 30 days.

<< What do your Gitmo friends think about individuals being held indefinitely, in virtual isolation, without being charged with any crime? Do you think your friends would consider a place pristine that detained individuals who had been sold for money by Afghan warlords and bought by us? >>

Both of my friends are soldiers. They take their orders and do their jobs. If they had opinions about the above political issues, they didn't share them with me. Although both said the prisoners were bad apples and very demanding. They said many would taunt them, hoping to provoke a physical encounter. But sailors at Gitmo are well-trained not to engage them. Neither had a physical encounter with a prisoner.

Both are redeployed now, one in Kuwait and one in the gulf, so I cannot pose your question to them immediately. Remind me again in another six months, ok?

As far as Abu Graib goes, I assume we all agree that what happened there was an illegal action by some rougue soldiers. Their crimes have been detected by the US, investigated by the US, and prosecuted by the US. Civilized societies police themselves and I'm glad to be part of this nation.
