We saw some very good films at the Full Frame Documentary Festival this year.
Here are a few of them.
The first, “Sherman’s March” an oldie, by Ross McElwee, would be available online at Netflix, etc. McElwee received the career award at this year’s festival for his unusual, odd and often funny films. One of the presenters, Michael Moore, said his inspiration for the technique in “Roger and Me” came from McElwee’s “Sherman’s March.”

Alan Gurganis was hilarious. He said, if Ken Burns is a french horn off in history with amber echos, and Michael Moore is a tuba on a PA system, then Ross McElwee is the wittiest of oboes, plangent, human and true.

On a more serious note, “The Devil Came on Horseback”, a story of the Darfur massacres, as told through the eyes of a US Marine Captain, working as an observer, was one of the more compelling explanations of the terrible tragedy of Sudan and Darfur, that I've seen. Not easy to watch but very educational.

“Everything’s Cool” was an entertaining update on the Environmental movement, and did a good job of clearly showing how special interest groups have been successful at derailing much of the effort to curb Global Warming. They named names and followed the money.

“For the Bible Tells Me So’ was a compelling look at efforts by the Religious Right to demonize homosexuals, and dealt in an interesting way with several families (some famous, some not) who had a son or daughter “come out”, and how the parents and siblings reacted. I was prepared to be bored by this movie but it was good, quite moving.

“Zo is Dat” was a year in the life of a bachelor Dutch farmer, his livestock, his dogs and a lady friend. A little gem of a movie, the cinematography just sparkled.

I’ll post a few more later.
This year’s festival was very good. There were documentary fans and movie makers from all over the world. We always have a good time.. Documentary festivals are catching on, for any who like a good documentary, it would pay to keep an eye out for any such efforts in your own area. Or come to Durham next year and we’ll go out to dinner afterwards and hash over what we’ve seen each day :)
