But unfortunately there have been many miscarriages of justice in our system. Some have been caused by judges with a political agenda, some by unscrupulous lawyers and some by self-serving prosecutors who care more for personal gain than they do the laws they're sworn to uphold. One of the most glaring examples of a miscarriage of justice happened recently in a high profile case in which lacrosse players at Duke University were charged with multiple counts of rape and all manner of sexual charges. After three young men have had their good names dragged through the mud for a year we find out that the woman who brought the charges is unstable and untrustworthy and the prosecuting attorney, Mike Nifong, hid evidence and refused to pursue the truth because the truth went against the way he wanted the case to turn out. He inflamed the black community of Durham to the point that there were death threats against young men who were innocent of any crime. But this didn't deter Nifong from proceeding in his dirty little game courting the black vote in his re-election bid. And one of the most surprising things in a school like Duke University, supposedly a bastion of free speech and higher learning and innocent until proven guilty philosophy, 88 professors condemned these three young men. Now how can anybody ever trust the teaching staff at Duke ever again? They may have a lot of book learning but they sure are lacking in the common sense department. The more I hear about college professors the more I'm convinced that a lot of them are just old hippies, still trying to live in the Sixties where everybody with a decent haircut was a racist. Now Mike Nifong faces the wrath of a community he has deceived and a justice system he has perverted and he'd better hope that he gets a fairer shake than he gave the three lacrosse players. As for the college professors who publicly stood up and prematurely judged these young men I'm sure they'll be able to justify their actions. It seems their ilk always have an excuse and rarely have to pay for their verbal mistakes. But speaking of paying, you can bet your boots that somebody is going to pay for this farce. I've got a feeling that these young men are going to sue everybody accept the janitor who swept out the courthouse. Of course, this was a media circus and Mike Nifong loved his time in front of the television cameras but I've got a feeling that's going to change. It's one thing to be the antagonist and another thing entirely to be the antagonized. Pray for our troops. What do you think?
