Campus law says you check'em in. He broke that law too. This was in no way a legal thing.

Federal law prohibits guns from school grounds

Is that college grounds too, or just K-12? In Utah it is legal to carry a firearm on state university campuses (now, after the state Supreme Court smacked down the University of Utah for refusing to comply with the law).
