I think when discussing this it is good to remember just how large a percentage of our population has mental problems:

Mental problems often strike after 18, and are sometimes brought on by the stress of college. Even students without long term mental problems can develop short term mental instability while in college- due to relationships, overwhelming fear of the future, pressures from parents, fear about grades. My worry is more about suicide than about psychotics, because there are so many more suicides in this age group and the preferred method is the handgun, but obviously if one had a psychotic break and had not planned ahead, a gun easily within reach would make it much much worse.
