I am always happy to see the CDC respond to a crisis, and for the health departments to mobilize for education and support. If that's meddling, I'd like to see a heck of a lot more of it.

Not too many would argue against that. What about a tax penalty for various health sins, or a tax credit for doing healthy things? What about an extra deduction ($3K) on your tax if you meet a reasonable set of benchmarks for healthful living, with medical documentation required as proof (like a new 1099-HEALTH that your Doc issues you each year). There could be adjustments for genetic issues IMO. The point would be that you are doing a significant effort to live healthfully.
