Which values do you think they should ignore with regards to law?

What clothes people can legally wear, who can socialize with whom, when and what individuals can eat, what sex you need to be to drive, and most things that are basically ridiculous in modern life, and opposed by all but the most fanatical Muslims population as well as all the non-Muslim population. Iranians can't dance in public places, for example. I think even most Iranian Muslims agree that that law is completely ridiculous. If one thinks a good Muslim shouldn't dance in public, he shouldn't, but if other Muslims think its OK, then let them dance.

"So why legally prohibit non-Muslims from eating in public during Ramadan?"

I don't think that is a major issue, do you? I don't see it as a 'value' in any event.

It's not a major issue at all, but it is what I mean by legislating their religion. If good Muslims don't eat in public during Ramadan, fine, they don't have to. On the other hand to forbid eating for everyone is legislating religious behaviour, and that's the area where I'm saying Muslims are way behind the other major religions.

rcg, I think Westerners would generally support the idea of removing all legislation of civil rights including table manners. I think that non Muslims should be able to eat wherever they like during Ramadan or any other Muslim holiday.

The problem that most Christians and Jews have with Islamic law is that it clearly violates all of our civil rights. If Muslims want to have a super code of conduct that enables women to be gang raped for showing bare skin, that is an issue that needs to be balanced with her rights of privacy. Islamic law doesn't extend much value to the individual rights of a woman, or any individual for that matter. Everything is for the transcendental love for God.

Western religion does pretty much the same thing as Islam when it comes to the violation of civil rights. Over time, church and religion have been separated to protect people from the intolerance of the church for deviant behavior. People reserve the right to civil rights that religious fanatics want to persecute.

I have no idea why Muslims are so complacent with the status quo of Islamic traditions. No one in Christianity is willing to sit back and accept terrorism in the name of God's instructions. Just now, I think that Iraq is beginning to communicate their message for reform of the conditions that support fundamentalism and terrorism in the Middle East.

The war on terrorism obviously effects Muslims more than it effects Christians. I'm more worried about drunk drivers and serial killers than terrorists in this country. However, these fundamentalists are killing record numbers of Muslims every day in Iraq. The Shiites there need our help, the Sunnis need our protection from the Shiites, the Saudis need us there to contain the Iranians, the Isrealis need us there, everyone in the world needs us there except for the Iranians and the Democrats.
