Thank you I guess the "semi" thing should tip people off- but the problem is it looks like news, and some people (obviously) will believe it. That's a problem. I think occasionally people believe the Onion stories too- especially before the Onion got to be famous. There is no shortage of credulity, and most people don't have the time or inclination to look things up, and that goes for both sides of the debate. I've seen errors from both sides. But I think this one was particularly vile, since a man's reputation and a religious community are the targets.
