You seem to think the Police are here to protect you. I know, I know, they have "to protect and serve" on their cars. They are here to catch the bad guy after he attacks you, not before. We all hope that the fact that they are here will keep crooks from attacking us, but that's not their job. If you think otherwise, ask them for "protection" from an irate person or a stalker. Perhaps your "ex" is after you. Reality will sink in quickly. Remember, the only person you can count on to protect you is you. You don't "give kids guns." They buy them if they want them. That's their right in this country. There are many ways to commit suicide. Again, because someone might decide to blow their brains out, you want no one to have a gun. That "Nanny" approach won't work.
