A smart person once told me not to buy your personal residence for investment reasons... and I think they are right. Buy it because you like it; a lifestyle choice.

One aspect that is always underestimated is maintenance/decorating costs. It nickle and dimes you to death. I've replaced the flooring in my family room and kitchen with tile... now my wife tells me that that particular tile is no longer cool and needs to be replaced. Great, $1000's of dollars and total disruption of my life for something that appears to be entirely serviceable to me.

The problem with a "home" is that it is also a "building". Homes are great; buildings are a pain in the ass.
