Sure, but the detector 130 m above the ground isn't detecting radium 1 mile beneath the ground. It is detecting the radiation from rocks near the surface. Gamma radiation intensity is reduced 50% by 6 cm of concrete, or by 9 cm of packed earth. Not much will get through a mile of rock.
