Much of government spending has payback.

The majority of it is simple redistribution. Social welfare programs have both positive and negative results. Interventions like farm programs have mostly negative results.

In any case Ted was comparing a war that was apparently bankrupting France, to a war that consumes about 1% of our GDP and saying they are eerily similar. My point was that his point was incorrect, even silly. Your comments don't really address my point. If you assume that the spending on the war is 100% a pointless waste, it still doesn't support Ted's idea.
