Agree----more consideration of the treatment of young people with anti-depressants.

Ritalin and Adderall were given to children in elementary school to control their behavior---prescribed by doctors beginning approximately in the 1970's.

Parents and teachers wanted model children. No "unruly" children at home or in the classroom-----no children needing to sleep at their desk, increase their attention span with Adderall.

Sure the hyperactive child who wants to sharpen his pencils every 10 minutes in a classroom is a distraction to the others----but he or she doesn't need to be treated with drugs to deal with the problem if there is a problem.

Did two weeks of substitute work in a rural elementary school-----the teachers warned me about a student that they couldn't control---he was not on medication.

Didn't take long to assess the problem-----he was very intelligent and restless.

By the end of two weeks this young man was changed as I identified his interests and gave him responsibilities to help him direct this energy. It worked. (No drugs needed.)

Having said that-------there are no doubt times when medication is needed but should be used judiciously.

I have a feeling Cho was on more than antidepressants. Maybe something like Haldol or other such medications prescribed for more acute afflictions?
