I'm all for helping people better themselves as well, but I have seen far to much of welfare mentality to think that much of what the government does has any positive effect. What truly disgusts me is seeing government aid enable dependent lifestyles. It is very common unfortunately.

I would happily support mandatory exercise programs for anyone on public assistance. What I don't like is paying for public transport so they don't have to waddle to the store three blocks away. Don't laugh either, I know an individual who fits that description. The government pays for a taxi to take this individual two blocks to the local supermarket, when the exercise would be the single most valuable thing the government could provide. Instead they pay for the taxi (said individual gets "panic attacks" when on a public bus, plus no bus goes the two blocks), provide a social worker to clean the apartment, and indeed cook a few health meals per week on site (not every day), etc, all so said individual can lay in bed most the day. Did I mention the government also forked over for stomach surgery? The person is perfectly capable of working, but succeeded in conning some social case worker into recommending all this crap, and guess what, the more such people the social work has to take care of, the better their job security. What the heck??? That is why I'm pissed.

I well know that there are deserving poor, as well as plenty of people who richly deserve to be poor. America remains the land of opportunity for those willing to get of their asses.
