Don,

That's a pretty good selection for a machine to use on travel. The only thing I'd suggest is to add another GB of RAM- it will help when running a number of applications at the same time. I know you expect she'll run Windows most of the time, but I think it'll be most likeable if she runs Windows in Parallels instead of Boot Camp. That way the Mac system is always available and Windows accesses the Internet through OSX's firewall which can be set up to be very tight.

When set up this way, though, you want to max out the RAM because the temptation is to run a lot of software simultaneously, both Mac and Windows. it's quite easy to hit the page-out/page-in barrier in that case and that does slow the machine down.

Good luck,

Jeff

Oh, if you get the Mac and Parallels, it won't be long before she'll sort of stop using Windows. :-)

Pick-up iWork too. It's pretty darn good and Pages (iWork's word processor) is a lot less hassle to use than Word.

I am considering buying my wife the 13" Macbook 2ghz duo core with 1 gig ram and 80 gig hard drive to use for travel while in Japan.

I would only advise to get the black one, having read evidence that as the white ones age, the plastic can yellow due to heat and environmental issues. Of course being white, it's more prone to discoloration from dirt and skin oils anyway.

I think the overheating problems have gotten better, one issue last year was due to a manufacturing problem where one of the vents was getting blocked by some plastic.

I never buy the first generation of any computer product, Apple seems to have as many issues as other manufacturers do in that regard. Since assembly has now moved overseas, Apple's QA seems to have suffered a hit for their hardware lately.

As a follow on to Don Green's request, does anyone know of a good way to do dialup with the MacBook Pro? Is a USB modem the only option? My father recently purchased the 15" model, and I was unaware Apple is no longer including modems built into them. He travels a lot and sometimes goes to places where they think broadband is a female rock group and wireless Internet is something restaurant workers use in their hair to keep it from ending up in the food. Dialup will be his only option there.

I see Apple sells a USB modem on their web site, but even the reviews there show and average of 3/5 stars on it. Some think it's great, others say it's horrible.

Any recommendations for dear ol' dad on using dialup if he has to with his MacBook Pro?

Does the 1.83 GHz have heat issues?

The 1.83 that I have seems to be OK as far as heat goes. Which I could say the same for my G5 iMac whose fans almost drive me to put my fist through the screen. (but I didn't - LCDs are far less fun to perform that action with than CRTs, which make a much more satisfying crunch - plus the image of a CRT hanging off my arm is far more cool than a LCD bracelet, but I digress as usual)

The Macbook did have two problems which were fixed promptly and with great gusto and speed when I brought it to the Apple store - under the 1 year warranty and without even a mention or a raised eyebrow that I don't have Applecare. (I figure with the insurance at 1/4 of the price of the computer, if it dies after 1 year I could always buy another computer. If I wanted the tech advice, I might have purchased Applecare)

The first problem was a stuck DVD disk in the drive - no trick would make it eject.

They replaced the drive and returned the DVD unharmed.

The second problem was the battery refused to charge - before I brought it in I followed all the tricks I could find on the Apple website and tried a few of my own (yes my own troubleshooting was quite a bit more substantial than shouting at it and making faces)

The battery looked normal and was not swollen.

I made an appointment in advance and I was in and out of the Apple store in ten minutes with a replacement battery.

The wording of the warranty worried me since it indicated that the battery was not covered but they replaced it for free as I would have reasonably expected.
