I actually found Ben Ami to be very refreshing. I should get his book. I agree with your view of him. I thought when reading the interview the first time that in fact, his view of Arafat was similar to yours: at the end of the day, Arafat didn't want peace, he wanted to keep ruling the Pals in an endless struggle. Too bad the Pals can't choose a native Sadat.

However, it was interesting the comments regarding Jerusalem vs. refugees, and even West Bank territory wrt to Arafat. Jerusalem was what Arafat wanted.

IMO, Ben Ami was very realistic in responding to Finkelstein's continued international law lines. He admits the issue, but also points out the things need to flex. Too bad they couldn't close the deal at Camp David or Taba.
