When people think of Virginia they think of Virginia as white Anglo-Saxon and Black because of our early beginnings.

Not true---------in the last 25 years Virginia has assimilated numerous people of varying national backgrounds.
(At the same time Virginia Tech has grown to 26,000 students on 2600 acres of land-----when I saw the # I was surprised, I figured about 12,000 students, but is now twice that.)

Along with this have come good results and problems.

I was also struck by the different nationalities represented in the students and teachers who were killed.

Our universities attract students from all over the world and from various states.

I was particularly touched by the 78 year old teacher who gave his life so that others might live.

Our universities have always had an international flavor with many brilliant professors who came from various international backgrounds----Russian, Ukranian, German, French, Rumania, Hungary----many here to escape persecution in their own countries and to impart their knowledge in their fields-----often sciences, mathematics, engineering, and language.

This has been a difficult few days for all of us in Virginia. I have many friends who went to Tech and friends who have children who go there-----Virginia truly is one big community. (Last message today.)
