I spent long enough in government not to be willing to trust them with virtually unlimited amounts of power and resources to "protect" me. Like Iktomi said, a lot of good is done at federal, local and state levels by law enforcement but at the end of the day they are bureaucracies staffed by bureaucrats and overseen by politicians. I wouldn't trust the latter group to organize a Sunday picnic most of the time, after meeting a lot of senators and congressmen on foreign trips back in the 90's. The idea of an unaccountable super-executive branch is even worse. It brings out all the worst in human nature, as we see. But it won't change until we start throwing out complacent incumbents in large numbers. Last November's election may have been a harbinger of more to come in 2008, we'll see.
