Dancing is forbidden in many cultures where it is viewed as a cause and effect relationship with regards to conduct leading to lascivious behavior, including diverse subcultures of the USA. Most types of lascivious behavior is not currently outlawed in the USA but it is certainly frowned upon, with social opprobrium commonly employed to discourage such conduct where legislation does not.

The culture in Iran emphasizes modesty, so it is not surprising that dancing, which often results in open displays of lasciviousness, is forbidden. Is modesty a religious value? Is modesty not a general value in most societies? It is both of course. Does it translate to unIslamic? There are many allowed forms of dancing in Islam but yes I suppose in this particular example it does. Does it also translate to immodest? yep.

Do Muslims in America entertain themselves at dancing? Yes. Is that UnIslamic? It seems you've made yourself the judge, so what do you say?

In other parts of the middle east you will see differences. Belly dancing is a common form of entertainment in the middle east. The art of belly dancing originated from the Middle East and other Arabic influenced regions many centuries ago. It was popularised in western countries in the late 1890's.

Sufis dance and Islamic scholars approve of Sufism.
