Exactly!

Use of the word 'kid' versus 'adult' is another example IMO. What are we to infer, that an adult would not commit such a senseless slaughter? Only a 'kid' would do such a thing?

Or, that since it is a 'kid' he must be drug laden or deranged since this is the only explanation for this killing?

PCness has run amok. Many on SI, are partners in this type thinking, especially the gun control advocates. They need to separate the killer from the gun. So they choose words to identify the killer more as a victim. Then, they can argue against the gun.

i agree with you....natural disasters are tragedies...the massacre was tragic, labeling the massacre a tragedy (in the singular sense as you point out) is a subtle but relevant mischaracterization because it lumps crimes with natural disasters...as you say...subtle and beyond the recognition of less astute observers
