That Egypt occupied it for awhile is immaterial.

Its not immaterial. You claimed that Israel took it from the Palestinians. They didn't. Israel took it from Egypt. Who did Egypt take it from? Well before they took it no one really had control, before that period of war, the UK had control. Before the UK the Turks had control. Before the Ottomans. Before the Ottomans, the Mumluks. Then going back further in time you get the Ayyubids (the Sultanate founded by Saladin) and the Kingdom of Jerusalem (crusaders), then the Sejuck Turks, the Fatimids, then various other groups, until you get to Byzantine control, The Byzantines controlled it because the Romans took over the area around 63 AD. Before the Romans you had Jewish control, before that Hellenistic control (Alexander and the Diodachi), before that Persians, then Babylonians, then Jewish control, the Jewish people took it from the Caaninites, who had in turn taken it from other people, all the way back to pre-history.

The Palestinians never controlled the area for anyone to take it from them.
