I heard an interview with family who lost someone (a daughter I think) at Columbine. They were really insistent that the answer to this was not a discussion about gun control and more laws but more kindness. They go around the country talking at schools and have had some children tell them that they were planning something similar but would now give it up.

They were really concerned that all the media attention went to the anger and rage of the shooter. It was all negative. They wanted to focus on the positive. They noted that the person they lost was kind and compassionate and they wanted to focus on her instead.

I think it was a refreshing attitude given who they were.
