I certainly wouldn't want to be standing around trying to keep things civilized in downtown Baghdad while most local yokels want to kill me.

At some point, Zarqawi and his people decided that it was time to return to tradition and to go back to to basics - and triggered a war between the Shi'a and Sunni. As those 2 groups started fighting quite enthusiastically, we found ourselves in the middle - fighting both warring sides, trying to stop them from fighting each other. A guy trying to stop a fight is likely to get slapped from both sides.

In Bosnia, rightly - or wrongly - but at least we DID take one side, and terrorized the other side into giving up - and the fighting stopped. It seems that after those ancient hatreds are allowed to blow up, "evenhandedness" just pisses off everyone even more.
