OTOH if your pulling in CO2 from the air to make the hydrocarbons then the artificial hydrocarbons would be just as "carbon neutral" as straight hydrogen, and there are logistical advantages to having gasoline rather than hydrogen which is more difficult to store and transport, and would need a redesign of existing cars.

All good points. There certainly would be substantial cost involved in retooling the auto industry to Fuel Cell technology, including the cost of Platinum and other catalysts.

It certainly adds to the potential attractiveness of the concept..
