I see what you are saying. I think people are untethered for other reasons than just suspicion and fear- but those certainly help. I think the biggest "untethering" is the fact that we live in nuclear families, and those are often broken, and we often don't know our neighbors, and we aren't active in our communities- and even if we are active, we only mix with a very limited number of people who do the same things we do. That is what I meant by an atomized society. I do think atomization can make you suspicious and fearful, but I think those things grow out of structural problems in our society.
