Besides, you are assuming that the bulk of the murders occur during stickups and such.

I'm assuming nothing of the sort.

In over half the cases, the victim knew his or her murderer.

Which includes crimes of the sort that packing heat could deter, or that defensive use of a gun could stop.

Only about 25% of all murders occur during the commission of other felonies

That's quite a big chunk. Also it doesn't have to be in the commission of another felony for an armed citizen to deter or stop an attempt at murder.
