Interesting that obesity is showing up in countries where food is expensive relative to income, the number of cars is low, and there is not too much cable TV or air conditioning.

There are some speculative theories that some agent -virus, bacteria, etc. - is changing the levels of the hormones from the digestive system that tells us when we are full.

There is some recent evidence that a change in intestinal flora can increase or decrease the ablity to metabolize food. So someone with the same acitivity level and food intake would start gaining weight.
