Allen - the "conservative extremes" (Lindybill) are out milking the threads on the abortion news and the shooting news. They want to bring back abortion and gun rights as issues in th election. It worked for them before, it might again if the dems are not careful.

Our gun policies should not be determined by events that occur a few times a year at most, across the entire country, no matter how tragic those rare events are.

Again, your Wikipedia URL is an attempt to not face the fact of your REAL options when faced with an armed homicidal maniac.

That's rare, but getting mugged is not rare. And a lot of people are permantly injured or killed when that happens.

I am not going to google up all the cases to prove the point, but you might be amazed at how many times having a gun has run off a potential criminal. At least carry pepper spray. Books have been written on the subject. Again, find them yourself.

The rule of thumb when faced with terminal violence is:

"Charge a gun, run from a knife."

It's counterintuitive to do the first, but if you are going to be killed, it's your best chance. The same thing is taught in the military when caught in an ambush.

Guns, while our first amendment right and all that, are not without their problems. I don't want to take guns away from anyone, but because they are problematic, and there are all too many idiots out there, I'd rather not see everyone carrying- and they won't be.

In california Zero Tolerance zones have nothing to do with people who have permits to carry- so that's a non-issue. You can still have a gun in a zone, as long as you have a permit- they send home flyers to that effect from the school. The zones are for increased penalties should there be offenders (IE gang bangers- probably)- so they will have enhanced fines/sentences. Not a bad idea I think.

I find it amusing to see the people talking about the Tree of Liberty. It seems to be mostly watered with suicides. Now I don't mind that, but still... If it ever comes to an asymmetric war with our government, that's going to look more like Iraq- and we're going to be using IEDs rather than guns. Guns don't work so well against a huge military industrial complex- for that you need terror, and for terror there's nothing like bombs.

Here's my most important point: Our gun policies should not be determined by events that occur a few times a year at most, across the entire country, no matter how tragic those rare events are.

Completely agree. Just as bad cases make bad case law; so events like this make for bad public policy. There is much to learn form this about the way campuses respond to troubled students, centralize information on them, etc. But arming students and faculty is, without a doubt, the very worst thing that can be done.

We don't need more guns; we need less.
