Putting `Muslim face' on fight

OTTAWA BUREAU

OTTAWA–Canadian diplomats and defence officials have made overtures to the United Arab Emirates to contribute military personnel and equipment to Afghanistan in a bid to put a "Muslim face" on the mission.

The deputy commander of Canada's Afghan mission led a small liaison party to the country's "special operations command" in January to discuss the "feasibility of a bilateral agreement" that would see the UAE join the international military mission.

And according to a defence department briefing note, they got a welcome reception with the small Arab nation signalling it was interested in contributing a "small tactical unit."

The contribution could include four LeClerc main battle tanks, two platoons of armoured reconnaissance vehicles, two self-propelled 155-mm guns and a detachment of unmanned aerial vehicles.

"The UAE also wishes to contribute to reconstructive efforts," read the document, obtained by the federal New Democrats under access to information.

The document cheered the possibility that the UAE could join the International Security Assistance Force mission, which already boasts 35,000 troops from 37 nations.

"This development could have very significant positive effects on the situation in Kandahar, especially if it leads to greater involvement of the UAE in the area of operations," the document said.

"The UAE is capable of bringing considerable financial support to development projects and would provide a Muslim face to International Security Assistance Force operations, providing a counterpoint to insurgent rhetoric," it said.

"We would be terribly understrength without the:
1. 7-fold increases in enlistment and reenlistment bonuses as high as $150,000.
2. Stop-Loss technique that keeps men in service beyond the date they contracted for.
3. The periodic retirement suspension that also keeps some combat troops in the service.
4. The multiple combat tours for Reserve and National Guard units."

Yes, and that CANT go on forever. The Democrat Leadership, the Media, the Hollywood Crowd, and the Liberal elitists on campuses, all have made it so much more difficult to recruit individuals of outstanding caliber. Weapons of today and the future will almost require an engineering capacity to operate. If we dont wish to become a bananna republic we better soon change our thinking. jdn
