Dennis Kucinich plans to introduce Articles of Impeachment for Dick Cheney next Wednesday, April 25. Kucinich's timing couldn't be better, as the Gonzales hearings exposed the complete mismanagement and corruption of the Justice Department by yet another "loyal Bushie" hack. Even the Pentagon Post and the NY Times are shaking their heads in disgust. Bush's dismal performance at a town hall meeting in Ohio - captured on Youtube - did nothing to improve his ratings, as the Republican daily tracking poll at Rassmussen hit an all-time low of 36%, with just 16% strongly approving while 45% strongly disapprove. Kucinich's timing is also perfect because impeachment activists will spell out I-M-P-E-A-C-H all around the country on Saturday April 28. When Kucinich introduces his Articles of Impeachment, all eyes will turn to Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi insists Bush's impeachment is "off the table" in part because a successful impeachment would make Cheney president. But what if Cheney is impeached first? Pelosi will have a hard time blocking the groundswell of support for impeachment. In her home state of California, Progressive Democrats of America is leading a campaign for the state Democratic party to adopt an impeachment resolution on April 28 - an event Pelosi is expected to attend. Will Pelosi use the occasion to attack progressive activists? At a time when progressive activists speak for the 58% of Americans want the Bush regime "over," that would be an insane political act. Indeed, there are signs the stubborn and mindless resistance to impeachment by Democratic leaders is crumbling. Just days after Vermont Senate President Pro Tem Peter Shumlin walked out of a meeting with impeachment activists from around the state led by Dan DeWalt, Shumlin's Senate quietly passed by 16-9 a resolution calling on the U.S. House to launch impeachment proceedings of Pres. George W. Bush and Vice Pres. Dick Cheney. It was a grudging but important admission that impeachment belongs "on the table" in Washington DC. In Washington State, 100 impeachment activists led by Linda Boyd went to the State Capitol to give impeachment one last push before the legislature adjourned. While they did not get a vote on Senator Eric Oemig's resolution, they did get an unprecedented quasi-debate and rightly claimed victory. John Nichols says the "impeachment from below" movement is gathering steam. DC Democrats still put forth anti-impeachment arguments--particularly the old saw that going after Bush would just give the presidency to Cheney. Activists have countered with an "Impeach Cheney First!" campaign and a reminder that the Constitution in no way prohibits holding more than one official to account at the same time. They've also picked up an argument made by Daniel Ellsberg, of Pentagon Papers fame, who says it was the threat of impeachment that got Richard Nixon to bend to pressure from Congress to wind down the Vietnam War. "If you want to move Bush on Iraq," says Ellsberg, "get serious about impeachment." Millions of Americans are doing just that. And the best way to show your support is to spell out I-M-P-E-A-C-H at the gathering nearest you on Saturday April 28.democrats.com
