The Social Conservatives don't want you to engage in certain types of sex and drugs. Gay, Heroin, etc. The Social Liberals don't want you to engage in certain types of economic activities. Full Free Enterprise, buy/sell guns, etc.

As a second order effect the reduced levels of guns might reduce the access to guns and levels of gun assisted crimes." I believe a Social Liberal would argue that the first order effect would be to reduce the access to guns and levels of gun assisted crimes, with a possible second order effect the reduced level of self protection. Second, "The Social Conservatives want to ban drugs and the first order effect would be to stop the Social Liberals from hurting themselves. As a second order effect the reduced drugs may reduce the access to drugs and levels of addiction." I believe a Social Liberal would argue that the first order effect is to increase drug availability (huge profit motive), and that the harm done to society in general and specific individuals far exceeds the harm from a drug user hurting himself. The social liberals think people can't be trusted with guns, so want to deny access to firearms "for people's own good". They are the same side of the same coin.
