>>Where is the data that measures deterrence? What keeps intruders from entering your home at any given time?

Statistics can be twisted any which way.

I did not buy any hand guns until after my kids were in their teens and after 9 11. It became quite clear to me in Northern NJ that you have better be prepared to defend your self because after an attack the police certainly cant be counted on.<<

Quehebo -

First, I think having guns in your home is different from carrying a concealed weapon while in public.

But even so, how does having a gun in your home provide a deterrent to an intruder? Do you have a sign that says you have guns?

I also live in northern NJ and have come to exactly the opposite conclusion. I don't look forward to the day when the very vituperative debates in our town council are leavened with council members pulling pistols from their pockets.

Guns kept in the home for self-protection are 43 times more likely to kill a family member, friend or acquaintance than to kill an intruder, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Guns on the street make us less safe. For every justifiable handgun homicide, there are more than 50 handgun murders, according to the FBI.
