As to the substance of your post, I think that what we do in the wake of these catastrophes needs to be well considered. As evidenced by 9/11, some responses make sense, like reinforced cockpit doors. Some are, at best, comforting to those who aren't too analytical but wasteful, like putting liquid cosmetics in baggies.

It's hard to estimate whether or not armed students would produce more or fewer casualties over the long haul. Most likely more, I'd guess. And who knows whether there would be an armed student handy at just the time that the next guy ups and goes bonkers and whether he would be effective.

These events are like lightning strikes, which are going to do damage every so many years regardless of what we do. Tragic as they may be, it doesn't make a lot of sense to overreact to them or to do something just to feel good about doing something.
