No lab needed. The basic process has been done for centuries. It was discovered when Britain was running out of wood for making Iron. You couldn't use coal because even the bitumen coal had too much sulphur in it. So the discovery of coke was the key. You heat coal in an airtight container and get rid of the coal gas and coal tar. What remains is coke. Then use the coke for iron.

Coal gas ended up lighting Britain until the discovery of electricity. Coal tar is the basis for our modern Chemical industry.

But to break coal down like this and use it for electricity would cost double what we can do it for with gas or Nuclear.
