The Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) said in a statement sent they had launched "military operations against units of the Ethiopian armed forces guarding an oil exploration site," in the east of the country. In response to the attack, a spokesman for Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said: "It is a cold blood killing, a massacre. It is a terrorist act, ordered by a terrorist alliance that includes ONLF." advertisement The Chinese embassy in Addis Ababa confirmed the attack but said they could give no further details. "We are trying to get more information about it," a spokesman said. However, Chinese state media said the 200 gunmen kidnapped seven Chinese workers during the strike. China's Xinhua news agency, quoting a company official, said 65 Ethiopians and at least nine Chinese workers had been killed in the attack on the Zhongyuan Petroleum Exploration Bureau site in Abole, a small town in western Ethiopia's Somali state. The Chinese news agency said the gunmen briefly took control of the working field after exchanging fire with more than 100 Ethiopian soldiers guarding the area. More than a 100 soldiers protecting the field engaged their attackers in a fierce 50 minute gun battle, the report said, citing Xu Shuang, the manager of the Chinese firm. The ONLF is fighting for the independence of ethnic Somalis living in Ethiopia's Ogaden region. Last year the group warned international oil firms that exploring for oil and natural gas in the region "for the benefit of the Ethiopian regime or any foreign firm will not be tolerated". telegraph.co.uk
