I had XP running for 5 years without any ill effects. What does that tell anyone? Nothing. If you are not trolling for love on the internet or in email, it is highly unlikely that you will be hit with a problem. It is just that a lot of people get on the internet to do crazy things.
It is a fact that Windows has been hacked more times than OSX or otherwise. But in general both are safe enough for most people.

>>I'll make the converse claim... i've had Vista running for 3 months sans 3rd party security software (eg no antivirus), and have not experienced any ill effects. Free at last?<<

psylent -

Three months with no AV software? That's amazing. Vista must be a lot more secure than XP, then.

Of course, your PC wasn't sitting in a room in a hacker convention on an open network, with a $10,000 bounty on its head.
