I am not sure I understood what you said.

the original discussion started from "there is no reason why US and Canada can not be 1 country", I responded "would it be the same as why US and Mexico can not be one country", and then the notion of EU came up, and I pointed out that there was NAFTA (at least in theory). Thie issue of common currency was raised, I responded "UK is part of the EU, and has the pound as its currency".
