GG,
Her operation was nearly two years ago and it was done here in Florida. Now, almost a year ago she spent two days in a Philippine hospital due to a miscarriage while we were over there on a visit.

I think we could have had the thyroid operation done over there. It is a pretty simple procedure as serious surgery goes and they do it a lot, due to all the thyroid problems they have. In her case it turned out that there were two separate cancers and so I suppose that made it a more difficult case. Her surgeon was just retiring and was in fact training his replacement, and maybe for that reason and because there were two tumors, they took a special interest in her case, and the veteran doc made the determination that her disease was very likely a result of years ago nuclear tests in her part of the Pacific. He even got out some maps and looked at wind patterns.

We have insurance, of course. If you have anything here, it is best to carry about a million dollars worth, because you are at risk for at least that much in the worst case. OTOH if you don't have any assets at risk it doesn't really matter because you can get all sorts of procedures done anyway.

In the last two years Blue Cross has gone up maybe 5% per year.

I don't remember her total bill but I can give you another example: Years ago I fell off a high ladder and broke my hip. It finally gave out and about a year ago I had a metal hip installed. Works great. Anyway, I looked into going to India to have it done. Would have cost $6,000 for an English made implant plus travel, ect. I had it done here in Florida for a little under $20,000. Not bad, I suppose.
