Great post Sam.
One point to make. I think we had more support than 20% in vietnam and more than 20% in iraq. The real problem is that the bad locals know the terrain. Its always melting into the population for the bad natives. Hell, the insurgents may only have 20% real support and thats still enough if they can instill fear in their population, fight assymetric war against us, and melt into the population when we get close. I think i went wrong on this war because the ease of our victory in serbia. I still remember Col. Hackworth attacking the clinton policy in serbia and fortelling body bags by the thousands. I was really worried given the fierce nature of serb soldiers historically. When the worse didnt happen there, the neocons and the bushies formulated iraq more or less based on serbia and kosovo.
